“I was Surprised.”
Jeff McShane has been an ACH contractor for 25 years, and recently moved to a 460hp Iveco X-Way when ACH struck a deal with Iveco’s Perth dealer, AV Trucks in Redcliffe.
Jeff has been used to other brands, but when asked how his first few months in the X-Way had felt said laconically, “I was surprised actually,” a big statement from one not given to excessive language. At the top of Jeff’s reasons, apart from the comfort and driveability, was the performance and in-built safety. He often heads up and down the Greenmount hill, and his experience with X-Way’s engine brake in particular made for confidence in the fully loaded rig staying well within the speed limit. Jeff said his fuel efficiency has also improved significantly – around 2.4kms/litre on average.
Jeff said that a few years ago some of his mates had the previous model Iveco working on the Tonkin Highway extensions. “We shifted a lot of material, and those guys absolutely hammered them. But they all stood up. Very impressed.”
Iveco inserted the X-Way into its Australian range nearly two years ago, with what was then market-leading specs. Euro VI engines, advanced electronic transmission, a radar and sensor array that enabled a wide range of safety features.
But anticipating the hard usage in local conditions, Iveco X-Ways for Australian are all built to a European off-road spec. The transmissions are bigger, the cooling system is enlarged and the muffler is expanded.
The Cursor 13-litre engine is Euro VI stage D, which delivers close to Euro VII emissions levels, not due in Europe until 2025. Tied to the 12-speed ZF transmission the 460hp engine - 510hp is available - delivers smooth and largely step-free power throughout the duty cycle.
Getting on board an Iveco isn’t much different to other trucks. But the seat comfort and driving position is as good as it gets. There is plenty of vision and the switchgear is easy to access with at least one hand on the wheel. All operational controls, including auxiliary brake and adaptive cruise, are on the wheel or steering column.
The market for a single trailer, punchy and agile prime mover is a busy one indeed, with a wide range of proven competition. Many operators tend to stick to past experience when replacing or upgrading the fleet. But Iveco’s X-Way is making friends among experienced users that recognise an advantage in driver comfort, safety, emissions standards and fuel efficiency.
All hot buttons to operators keenly focused on total cost of ownership.
