The engines meet the stringent Euro 6 measure through the use of IVECO’s unique Hi-eSCR system as featured in the latest Eurocargo.
Hi-eSCR is a single after-treatment system featuring passive DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) – DPF regeneration does not require driver intervention. Other benefits of the technology is that it’s uncomplicated and efficient, and provides many benefits compared to EGR and SCR equivalents, including reduced fuel consumption and a lower tare weight.
The technology is unique to IVECO and patented to FPT Industrial. Other key benefits of Hi-eSCR include: no combustion products back into the cylinders, no additional cooling requirements, long DPF drain intervals, more power and torque density and lower specific fuel consumption (g/KWh).
The new engine range begins with the common rail Cursor 9, an 8.7 litre unit developing 360 hp at between 1600 and 2200 rpm and 1650 Nm of torque at between 1200 to 1530 rpm. This powerplant replaces the previous Euro 5 Cursor 8 and delivers the same horsepower as its predecessor but with an additional 150 Nm of torque.
Next up in the engine range is the common rail Cursor 11, an 11.1 litre engine that develops 460hp at between 1500 to 1900 rpm and 2150Nm of torque from an extremely low 925 to 1500 rpm. The engine replaces the previous Euro 5 Cursor 10 and provides an extra 50 Nm of torque.
At the top of the new engine range is the common rail Euro 6 version of the Cursor 13 – it’s a 12.9 litre unit developing 510 hp at between 1600 and 1900 rpm (10 hp than the engine it replaces) while torque remains the same at 2300 Nm from a low 900 to 1525 rpm.
The new Cursor 11 and 13 powerplants make the transition from the previous Variable Geometry Turbo to a new Garrett electronic Variable Geometry Turbo (eVGT), providing a number of performance efficiencies.
The units feature electronic actuators controlled directly be the engine ECU and provides immediate response at low engine speed, hence peak torque in the engines coming on from only starting from only 925 and 900 rpm respectively.
Other benefits include improved air induction, easier fault diagnosis and a significantly higher contribution to engine braking performance.
All engines are equipped with a new exhaust flap located in the exhaust manifold, the exhaust flap anticipates the activity of the after-treatment devices by increasing the temperature of the exhaust gas more quickly therefore allowing the SCR system to reach optimum working temperature faster, for increased efficiency.
The combination of the exhaust flap and eVGT delivers Stralis X-Way models with a 30 per cent improvement in engine braking capacity, potentially reducing the need to apply the service brake, leading to a longer life for discs and pads.
Compared to Euro 5 requirements, the Euro 6 engines in the new Stralis X-Way range provide a 50 per cent reduction in PM and an 80 per cent reduction in NOx, while hydrocarbon emissions have also been slashed.
The latest generation Cursor engines continue to boast generous oil change intervals of up to 75,000 kilometres depending on the application.
